BMW’s Motorsport’s division has been churning out some of the most exciting sports sedans and coupes since the E28 M5 debuted in 1985. However, the world really took notice when BMW homologated their M3 racecar for the road. Since then, there have been 5 generations of M3 sedans and coupes, with the current one being the F80 generation M3 sedan and M4 Coupe. Introduced in 2014, this was the first time the M3 name was applied to the sedan only, with the M4 moniker distinguishing the coupe.
This BMW M3/M4 Service Guide is intended as a guideline to owners, or perhaps potential owners, in what and when scheduled maintenance is recommended. Following this maintenance schedule will prevent any costly repairs or mechanical failures that can happen due if neglected.
Engine, Oil, Transmission, Clutch
The F80 M3 & M4 use the same S55 3.0L twin-turbo straight six engine, producing 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Although it produces only 11 hp more than the previous E90 generation M3, it produces over 110 lb-ft more torque. Each turbocharger is of a twin-scroll design, with intake air running through a liquid cooled intercooler. Both the M3 and the M4 are available with either a 6-speed manual transmission, or with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

When taking a closer look at the BMW M3/M4 Service Guide maintenance schedule, the major services are at about 30,000 mile intervals, with the biggest services at 30,000 and 60,000 miles. Oil changes should be done at 10,000 miles or at least annually. All 6 Spark plugs, coils, and wires should be changed at the 30,000 mile or 3-year mark. Brake fluid should be changed at 30,000 miles for the first time and every 20,000 miles after. If taken proper care, these engines have proven to be robust and reliable.
